Takashi Shibata Takashi Kawai Keiji Ohta Masaki Otsuki Nobuyuki Miyake Yoshihiro Yoshihara Tsuneto Iwasaki Abstract — This paper describes a method for reducing the discrepancy between accommodation and convergence when viewing stereoscopic 3-D images. The method uses a newly developed stereoscopic 3-D display system with a telecentric optical system and a mobile LCD. The examination of a mono-focal lens showed that a correction lens having the appropriate refractive power and conditions for presenting stereoscopic 3-D images clearly reduces the discrepancy between accommodation and convergence. The authors also developed a stereoscopic 3-D display that uses dynamic optical correction to reduce the discrepancy between accommodation and convergence. The display equalizes the theoretical points of accommodation and convergence. The purpose of the development was to expand the regeneration range of a stereoscopic 3-D image having the appropriate accommodation. An evaluation of the developed display showed that it resolves the discrepancy between convergence and accommodation.

Accommodative responses to stereoscopic three-dimensional display.

Experimental examination of the accommodative responses to a stereoscopic 3-D display found that accommodation was elicited by convergence and moved to the stereoscopic distance of the 3-D image. Immediately after the depth of the target was changed, the magnitude of response was smaller than that for a real target, but when the subjects fixated on the 3-D images, the responses were in almost t...

A binocular stereoscopic display system with coupled convergence and accommodation demands

Conflict between the accommodation and convergence demand in stereo display systems has been implicated as a cause for perceptual error (failure of size constancy), discomfort and visual system changes. A novel method is proposed for such displays, which, by utilizing measured object of fixation can resolve the conflicts via computational approach. We implemented such a display system and used ...

Visual fatigue caused by viewing stereoscopic motion images: Background, theories, and observations

The background, theories, and observations on visual stress possibly caused by viewing stereoscopic motion images are reviewed. Visual fatigue caused by stereoscopic images is a safety issue. Fatigue is possible caused by the discrepancy between accommodative and convergence stimuli that are included in the image. Studies on accommodation and convergence are surveyed and an explanation regardin...

Stereoscopic Vision Induced by Parallax Images on HMD and Its Influence on Visual Functions

Visual function of lens accommodation was measured while subjects used stereoscopic vision in a head mounted display (HMD). Eyesight with stereoscopic Landolt ring images displayed on HMD was also studied. In addition, the recognized size of virtual stereoscopic images was estimated using the HMD. Accommodation to virtual objects was seen when subjects viewed stereoscopic images of 3D computer ...
